Cybercriminals are using legitimate PayPal accounts to send out invoices stating they are from the Louisville Professional Firefighters Association. Their hope is people will automatically pay the invoice believing they are contributing to a good cause. Unfortunately, you will only be contributing to the criminal’s bank account.
Criminals set up legitimate PayPal accounts for this purpose because no spam filters will block the incoming email, and it gives the appearance of legitimacy.
Takeaways:
Be sure to verify any PayPal invoices you receive by methods other than calling the phone number on the invoice.
If you want to support firefighters, call your local station and ask how you can help.
